Skeeter Phelan
Skeeter Phelan is a character from the book "The help". During the time period that the book is based off of, segregation is a huge part of the everyday life. Skeeter has her own beliefs, she rejected the standard opinion. She had the idea to write a book, a book describing the lives, and stories of the local maids. This was risky for many reasons, and she faced many obstacles though out the process of writing and publishing her book. She was part of a group of women who supported segregation, and were not not approving in the slightest of the book. Skeeter tried to keep it hidden from them for as long as possible, but when they found out, it was a nightmarish situation. In writing the book, she had difficulties finding maids who would agree to share their stories. They feared that if it were to be found out, they had participated, they would lose their jobs, or worse. When Skeeter finally got a group of maids together, they had a bit of a rocky start, but once they got into it, the book was well on its way. The maids and Skeeter held secret meetings to tell their stories in order to keep the identities of the maids, and the author a secret. When it finally was time to publish the book, there was a lot of fear surrounding Skeeter and the maids, some of the locals in town had already become suspicious. Skeeter was going against practically everyone, her "friends" her mother, and the general society. But she didn't let any of that stop her, and her book became a success. This reflects overcoming obstacles because going against what is expected of you, in a very public way is not an easy thing to do. But yet, Skeeter did it anyway. She overcame her obstacles of society and produced an amazingly controversial book, with a lot of success.
